Mrs. Yeager's Second Grade

Second Graders are the Best!!
This year will begin my 25th year of teaching second grade here at Liberty. I am looking forward to another awesome school year.  We will be hard at work learning new terms in math and language. The students are eager to learn and very excited to be a part of our class.

I am so excited for this year to begin I have prayed for each of the students and can not wait until school begins.

We will have different centers for the students to enjoy after their work is done again this year like computers,a listening center, and a drawing table. We also enjoy fun days like silly sock day and snack sack day.

Along with our fun activities we learn so many things. We have a Bible lesson every day and Chapel each week.

The students learn to use their Bibles and are able to find things with the Table of Contents and Glossary as needed.

Weekly memory verses are given that go along with our Bible Lessons. Students learn what behavior pleases God and how to get

alone with others. Selected stories from both the Old Testament and New Testament are studied through the year.

Second grade English is divided into two parts: Grammar and Writing chapters are alternated through out the school year. Students are taught about topic sentences. story webs, and other forms of organizing their thoughts before they begin to write. Students learn the basic proofreading marks to be used in revising and proofreading of their work. The Grammar sections include sentence structure and different kinds of sentences, parts of speech, using a thesaurus, dictionary and proper punctuation marks.

Math will teach the students to understand and be able to perform the basic procedures in addition, subtraction, and beginning multiplication. Mad Dog Math helps the students to solve problems quickly and memorize the facts up to the 18 family. Each student will learn to re-group with addition and subtraction into the thousands place. They will be able to count money, tell time and read the thermometer. Basic geometric shapes will be learned along with English and metric units of length and weight. Critical thinking skills are used to answer questions and draw conclusions. Traditional math promotes structure and order that will show aspects of the world God created.

Reading is taught in order that each student will develop into a confident, eager, fluent reader. They will read for pleasure and also for understanding information. Comprehension is taught with silent reading, guided discussion and then oral reading with more guided discussion. Students are learning to communicate the author's message by tone, inflection, pacing, and feelings not just words. The student text is filled with a variety of stories and the workbook activities focus on specific reading skills.
